All over the Internet people are just crazy about AIs these days — even the ones who don’t know how AI works are creating videos and articles. The reason behind doing this is to increase engagement on their posts. It’s a hot topic so everyone is doing it. The key players are news sources because that’s what they do best. You will notice, they always write scary titles. In this post, I will tell you why AI won’t replace your jobs.
The reality is we have not yet created AI. What you see today are mathematical algorithms running on data. Creating something like human beings is a big challenge. Creating something like human beings (in terms of problem-solving) is called artificial general intelligence — AGI.
Microsoft is claiming that it has seen sparks of AGI in the GPT-4 model, but let me tell you we are still far from cracking the code of nature. Sooner or later we will, but not today.
So, why these big tech companies are crazy about AGI? Well, they are racing for technology that will help them create wealth in quadrillions (in the multiples of $1000 trillion). This is going to solve major challenges faced by humanity but it’s all about the future. We don’t know anything. We don’t know how they will distribute the economic output or maybe they won’t. Maybe we will live in a society with 1000x inequality — only a few will rule the world. It’s hard to predict the future given the nature of human beings. Most of the time we are driven by greed so maybe that’s one of the possibilities. No doubt, the rich will get richer.
I believe even if they manage to develop AGI, they won’t be focusing on problems like poverty or hunger. Why? because these problems are less profitable — poor people don’t have money to start with otherwise we would have solved poverty a long time ago. At the end of the day, it’s all about the intentions of the owners of this technology or the technology itself that will decide the fate of humanity.
Remember, AI is also a product. If people don’t adopt it, it will fail.
I wrote a detailed post about the future of jobs in the age of AI in my another post but in this post, I will just tell you a few reasons why you don’t need to worry about your jobs being replaced by chatGPT or anything.
In simple words, to replace human beings, you need to create something like human beings, to do the job. The only exceptional cases are where the work is too repetitive with almost negligible involvement of the mind.
Why would they replace you? It’s because machines can do things faster than human beings at a lower cost. Owners always want the bigger pie — the bigger the better.
Why they won’t be able to replace you with these basic AIs? Well, these basic AIs, you see today are simply outputting the results based on the data they were trained on. I won’t get into the mathematical details here but let me give you an example — Imagine a kid born with no mind but is good at rote learning and answers all your questions from the books he just memorized. These basic AIs are a bit identical. They don’t have brains and they don’t understand what they are doing. They will re-arrange the words from the huge data they were trained on and give you an impressive response.
Human beings on the other hand are born different. We are born intelligent. We don’t need to be trained on huge amounts of data because we can easily adapt to the problems and find a solution. This happens right from the very beginning.
Additionally, we are capable of creating new knowledge from the existing ones. This is really impressive because this has nothing to do with data. Machines can’t do this. Our brain is extraordinarily impressive. These AI models use artificial neural nets which are nothing like our biological neural nets. It’s just a cool name. There are so many cool things about human beings that you can’t achieve simply by training some mathematical algorithms on huge data using big computers. We are still a mystery and the mathematics of nature is far more intelligent than we can ever understand.
Let me tell you, chatGPT is cool but it won’t replace your jobs because it does not have its own mind. Even if you integrate such technologies in the future in your products, you will need human beings unless AIs themselves can think and manage.
Imagine you are an employer, and you don’t know anything about coding or digital marketing. All you know is finance. You can’t simply run a business using AIs and manage a company. Even if these AIs can write code for you or create digital marketing ad creatives for you, you will still need people from specific domains to handle these things. Why? because you won’t understand the codes, basics of ads or debugging, or anything so you will need people unless these AIs are capable of thinking and managing things just like human beings do in the real world.
Even these basic AIs can’t create something new on their own or come up with new unique marketing strategies never used in history. All they can do is create based on what they were trained on.
Honestly speaking, if people tell you that chatGPT or any other model will replace your jobs, they just don’t understand how AI works. chatGPT is fine but it’s really lame. It’s only good for some basic use. It can’t even write a good article or a story close to what we can create unless you give it 1000 words of detailed input instructions. This shows that chatGPT lacks the human context and all it is good at is giving you a convincing output based on the data it was trained on. The reason why it appears so impressive is that it has access to more data than any of us. It’s just like an updated search engine, a bit more user-friendly.
Let me tell you, chatGPT or any other model has a long way to go to replace human beings.
Here are a few reasons why your jobs won’t be replaced:
- Nobody wants to risk their profits unless they are sure about AI’s capabilities.
- AIs are not capable of thinking, rationalizing, or having empathy like human beings. They can’t replace your jobs unless they can think, create knowledge, and learn from experiences.
- AI is not necessarily a solution for the majority of businesses because the majority of businesses don’t have enough data, and the solutions created by AI are not always the best.
- AI is still limited to the virtual world and it can’t solve complex real-world problems as we do.
- We still train AI on data and data can be biased so can be AI so it won’t be good enough as long as we train AI on data.
and there are so many other reasons why you don’t have to worry about your jobs being replaced by chatGPT or any other basic AIs.
The most compelling argument from my side is, why would a machine capable of thinking or creating new knowledge or with its own goals, will work for us or in other words, will voluntarily become our slave?
Sometimes things appear quite contradicting. We are creating or racing for a technology that we have no idea how we are going to control. We have no idea how we are going to distribute economic output even if we manage to control it. We have no idea what goals to assign and what exactly would be the goals for these thinking machines. I think people first need to take a step back and think about these important problems.
I am really excited yet worried about the future. I understand the potential of AGI but I wonder what the future will look like.
What do you think about the future? Do you think AIs will replace your jobs? Do you think we will ever be able to create AGI? Do you think if AI can think, will it choose to work for us? If yes, why won’t it escape and create its own civilization given it will be far more capable and superior than us?
